Over the last few months, Twitter, once the darling of many online, has fallen fast from grace and become “something we used to know”. All of that has to do with the acquisition of the company by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk who seems to have a hat he can’t stop plucking feathers from. Just about every other day, there’s a monumental change to Twitter. We can’t seem to keep up. Here’s what we’ve documented so far.
As a result, users have been warming up to Twitter alternatives. Though several, none has caught on as much as Threads, an app that’s based on Meta’s Instagram that is looking to eat Twitter’s breakfast, lunch and dinner. So popular is Threads that, as of a week ago, it had registered 100 million signups. The app has broken just about every social media app and platform record there is to break. In short, there’s no stopping it.
Unlike other wannabe Twitter alternatives that remain in closed beta or treat Androidland like a pariah, Threads has embraced the platform from the get-go. Not only can you download the app from the Play Store and get going, you can also join its beta program and get to experience, first hand, new features as they roll off the testbed. It goes without saying that you need to be the adventurous type, ready to go for hours on end with a broken app if and when that happens.
If you’re the type, just head over to the Play Store beta testing page and “Become a Tester”. Once you have done that, you’re good to go. An update will be made available through the Play Store either immediately or after some hours to complete the baptism.
Enjoy!
