At the start of the year, Google started rolling out the cool “Coolwalk” design it had demoed at Google I/O 2022 for Android Auto to everyone. Since then, we are easily excited about what Google has up its sleeve as that update finally brought Android Auto up to speed with Apple’s CarPlay, its biggest competitor in the phone mirroring car infotainment segment.
So, colour us surprised when the latest such update, which sneaked in on us over the last few days, albeit in beta, showed up with nothing substantial. By substantial we mean something as groundbreaking as the realignment of apps and windows on a car’s dash. Not a new animation for the Google Assistant, which is what we are getting with version 10 of Android Auto, at least for now.
There’s been the demoed update targeting electric vehicles but that doesn’t appear to have shipped with version 10 which appears to be more of a housekeeping and maintenance update than the major release its version number would lead you to assume.
Since Android Auto exists as a built-in application on pretty much all Android smartphones, no action is needed on the part of the users in order to use version 10. Your device should be able to pick it up as soon as it is made available to you – if that hasn’t happened already.
