Nearby Share for Windows is now fully available for download and use on the platform, over 4 months since it debuted as a beta.
During the beta, Google says, Nearby Share for Windows was downloaded by over 1.7 million people and saw over 50 million files, most of them images and videos, transferred between personal computers (PCs) and Android devices.
Nearby Share is a feature that has been available on Android devices for a while that lets users quickly and easily share images, videos, documents, links, and other things between (Android) devices. The announcement by Google back in March of the beta app for Windows marked the first time that the feature was opening up to other platforms.
Android device makers who also double up as PC makers like Lenovo, Samsung, Huawei and others had come up with various means of using contact methods and ad-hoc networks to transfer files between PCs and Android devices.
Google says that it has taken time since the beta went out in March to iron out some bugs that were seeing frequent crashes and failure of transfers as well as add several features that are debuting with the final version of the app. The new features are the ability to get a peek at what’s being transferred as well as to know the time remaining before an ongoing transfer is completed.
“To make sharing between Android devices and PCs even more seamless, we’re working with partners like HP to include the Nearby Share app on select Windows PCs, such as the HP Dragonfly Pro,” Google says.
