My Chromecast with Google TV has just picked up a new March 2024 update, so you should also check your unit for a new firmware. The update brings the device’s Android security patch level up to date, although not the latest available for Google Pixel phones. This update, designated as STTL.240206.002, is now rolling out over the air and weighs in at 72.55 MB.
While the official release notes only mention the usual “bug fixes and performance improvements,” this update is significantly smaller than previous ones. This suggests a primary focus on addressing security vulnerabilities rather than introducing major new features.
Google has been notably proactive in 2024 with frequent Chromecast updates, surpassing the release schedule of 2023. The device remains on Android 12, with no new firmware for the voice remote detected yet. To check for the update, navigate to Settings > System > About > System update on your Chromecast with Google TV.
It’s worth noting that Google has also rolled out a visual refresh for the Chromecast with Google TV homescreen this year. App icons are now smaller and circular, a change from the previous rectangular design. However, a significant chunk of these visual changes hardly hit my unit because of my location, but at least this doesn’t affect the overall functionality.
