Since June last year, streaming service Showmax has been running a trial of live sports streaming.

The beta test, which has since concluded, paves the way for the full-on live sports streaming which is now available as Showmax Pro.

Showmax Pro “bundles the existing Showmax entertainment service with music channels, news, and live sport streaming from SuperSport.”

“Showmax Pro features all Premier League, Serie A, La Liga and PSL games, as well as a wide range of other live sports events including IAAF Athletics, professional boxing, and the world’s biggest marathons,” a statement from Showmax adds.

A monthly Showmax Pro subscription costs Kshs 2,100. For that, one gets the aforementioned content as well as the ability to stream on up to 2 devices concurrently in HD and registering up to 5 devices on a single account.

Some of the news channels that Showmax recently withdrew citing the lapse of its own contractual obligations with regards to providing COVID-19 content are making a comeback on the streaming service albeit limited to the Pro package where subscribers will have access to them.

Kenya and Nigeria are the initial markets where Showmax Pro is available at launch (July 7th, 2020). It is expected to be made available to users in other sub-Saharan countries covered by DStv, the sister service from which content is licensed from, over the next 2 months.

With 5 years of operating on the continent, Showmax has been around just long enough to know the importance of catering for the mobile-only users. As such, it is following in its own beaten path by offering a mobile-only Showmax Pro subscription that costs just half i.e. Kshs 1,050 per month.

As has been the case with Showmax Mobile, subscribers to Showmax Pro Mobile will be limited to streaming in standard definition, access only via one device (as well as being capped to registering just one device) and no concurrent viewing.

Both Showmax Pro and Showmax Pro Mobile do not include the standard 14-day trial period that Showmax usually offers new subscribers.
