Remember that Infinix smartphone that was all over the leaks with some insanely fast charging tech tipped to accompany it? Well, some of us thought that that would be the next Infinix Zero series smartphone. Turns out, it wasn’t. That turned out to be a concept device that ended up being called the Infinix Concept Phone 2021 and yes, it did showcase 160W fast-charging, juicing up its 4,000mAh battery in just 10 minutes!
Hopefully, we get to see that fast-charging tech, dubbed Ultra-Flash Charge (UFC), in Infinix devices soon.
Now, about that Infinix Zero series for 2021…

The device was unveiled yesterday at a global launch event held at the Royal Observatory Greenwich in London. The choice of the launch venue gives away what you’d expect of the device. Many of us know Greenwich as the “home of time” with global times referencing Greenwich where the Prime Meridian (longitude 0) passes with the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
At an observatory, scientists use various equipment to observe the open skies and space. What if, just what if, a phone could also do that?
That is exactly why the new Infinix Zero X Pro was there – and why the partnership between Infinix and the Royal Observatory Greenwich exists.
“The Zero X Pro includes breakthrough visual technologies such as 60X periscope moonshot camera and Infinix’s Galileo Algorithm Engine, a top-notch software feature allowing a high resolution looking shot of the Moon. Users can capture a crisp image of the moon using Infinix’s “Super Moon Mode” combined with the 108MP OIS main camera. Designed with the galaxy in mind, the Nebula Black colourway is a salute to the exploration of space and emulates the endless depth of the Milky Way galaxy,” reads a statement from Infinix.
The Zero X Pro’s 108-megapixel main camera (with optical image stabilization, OIS) is backed by an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera with a 120-degree field of view and an 8-megapixel Periscope camera with 5X optical zoom, 60X hybrid zoom and, of course, OIS. The two 8-megapixel lenses also double up as macro shooters.
On the front are two 16-megapixel sensors.
Other specifications of the device include a 6.67-inch Full HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a MediaTek Helio G95 chipset. MediaTek’s new Helio G96 chipset is the one that supports 120Hz displays right out of the box so how is the last generation chipset able to achieve the same? The answer lies in MediaTek’s Intelligent Display chipset, also included in the Zero X Pro.
There is XOS 7.6 which is based on Android 11 and a choice of either 128GB or 256GB onboard storage. There is 8GB RAM and, for those who care, very fast write speeds thanks to UFS 2.2.
Right out of the box, the Infinix Zero X comes with a 45W fast-charger to juice up its 4,500mAh battery, going from 0 to 40% in just a quarter of an hour. Infinix says that one can enjoy 3 hours of video playback on just a 5-minute charger.
The Infinix Zero X Pro comes in Nebula Black, Starry Silver and Tuscany Brow colour options.
Pricing and availability for Kenya haven’t been revealed, yet, but we are looking at a price tag of not more than Kshs 32,000 and an October release date in the country.
Infinix Zero X and Infinix Zero X Neo
Also unveiled alongside the Zero X Pro are two other Infinix Zero series smartphones: the (standard) Infinix Zero X and the Infinix Zero X Neo.
While there are marked differences among the trio, the Infinix Zero X is much closer to the headlining Zero X Pro while the Zero X Neo acts as the entry-level member of the series with stepped down specifications and features.
For instance, the Zero X and Zero X Pro share the same chipset, display size and resolution (as well as refresh rate) and battery (and the fast-charging) but only vary when it comes to the main camera sensor where the former replaces the latter’s 108-megapixel sensor with a 64-megapixel sensor.
The Infinix Zero X Neo, on the other hand, packs goes with an LCD panel over its siblings’ AMOLED units and expands it to 6.78-inches while lowering the refresh rate and touch-sampling rate to 90Hz and 180Hz from 120Hz and 240Hz respectively on the Zero X and Zero X Pro. It also goes with a 48-megapixel main sensor and limits its fast charging to 18W while packing a larger 5,000 battery unit.
While we have confirmation about the pending availability in the local market of the Zero X Pro, we have no word from Infinix on the fate of the Zero X Neo and the Zero X.
