Smartphone charging technology has seen tremendous advancements over the past few years from decent 15W charging speeds up to northwards of 200W with the likes of iQOO, Xiaomi and now realme which can fill up a 5,000 mAh battery in less than 10 minutes.
Revealed in China at the end of last week, the realme GT Neo 5 has become the first commercially available phone to offer 240W fast charging speed. While the company hasn’t stated how long it takes to fill a battery, they are on record saying that the model can achieve a “full charge in minutes”
Given that 240W fast charging is the theoretical limit for USB-C charging, it is going to be highly difficult for a competing company to beat realme unless they come up with a different USB standard.
To ensure this superfast charging speed is as safe as possible, realme applies what they call “PS3 fireproofing” from end to end and packs 13 temperature sensors throughout the charging system for “real-time security”. The battery is also augmented with graphene for extra phase change-based cooling.
While fast charging speeds typically raise the question of how long the battery will last due to wear and tear, realme says the realme GT Neo 5 is rated for 1600 cycles and given that in two years, a smartphone would have undergone between 300 – 500 cycles, 1600 cycles looks good for around 5 years of use which is more than enough time to upgrade to your next phone.
If you want to have a bigger battery for slightly less charging speed, the GT Neo 5 will come with two options, one with a 5,000 mAh battery offering 150 W charging and the other with the full 240W charging but with a smaller battery capacity at 4,600 mAh.
The rest of the specs look equally impressive, including being powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, an AMOLED display with a 2722 x 1240 resolution coupled with a 144 Hz refresh rate and an in-display fingerprint scanner.
On the software side, you get Android 13 out of the box running alongside realme UI 4.0. For the cameras, you get a triple rear setup consisting of a 50-megapixel main camera an 8-megapixel sensor for ultrawide shots and a 2-megapixel macro camera. For selfies, you get a single 16-megapixel camera at the front.
At the time of writing, realme has not yet provided a release date for the model, however, Pricebaba reports it will be released at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that will kick off on February 27 and end on March 2.
