In what is a tradition passed down from the early days of Android when it was still a developing company, each Android version has always carried a dessert-themed codename. From Ice cream Sandwich (Android 4.01 – 4.0.4) to Jellybean (Android 4.3.x) and my personal favourite Marshmallow (Android 6.0), Android has had some good monikers over the years.
The upcoming iteration of the operating system, Android 14, was only just recently given the dessert-themed codename ‘Upside Down Cake’ and it seems that the developers at Google are already looking into the feature, as unearthed by Mishaal Rahman tipped by TeamB58.
The name Vanilla Ice Cream in reference to Android 15 was found while digging through Google’s own code. According to Android expert Mishaal Rahman, this is not particularly new as Google tends to continuously work on improvements to the OS, and those changes that will not be complete by the time Android 14 is released later this year, will be pushed forward to 2024 when Android 15 sees the light of day.
As expected, with Android 15 still being at least 12 months away from release, it is impossible at this point to tell what changes and introductions it will be making. Android 14 on the other hand is just around the corner, and we have already taken an early look at changes it will be making.
Google no longer markets their dessert-themed codenames to its users any more. However, it keeps the names ticking forward for internal development references and for those enthusiasts who have stuck with the OS for a long time and is a nice little reminder from when the company was still finding its feet in the smartphone space.
