Google is bidding adieu to what in my books was the best version of Android — Android Lollipop — as it halts updates for Google Play Services on devices running the now-decade-old operating system. Lollipop, first introduced in 2014, brought us the delightful Material Design and paved the way for modern Android aesthetics. This is the OS that fully got me into Android, and it’s a sad day to see it go even though I haven’t interacted with a Lollipop device in years.
When Android devices stop receiving the latest OS updates, they typically continue to get Google Play Services updates. This is a vital component that keeps many basic functions of the phone running smoothly and ensures compatibility with new apps. However, Google has decided to stop these updates for Lollipop, citing its dwindling user base of less than 1%. This allows them to concentrate on devices with more advanced hardware and modern operating systems.
While Lollipop devices will continue to function, they won’t get any shiny new features or crucial security updates, and they might not play well with some apps that depend on Google Play Services.
If you’re still rocking a Lollipop device, it’s time to consider an upgrade. Newer Android versions not only offer the latest features and security but also guarantee a smoother and more enjoyable smartphone experience. As a Google spokesperson put it, “Lollipop devices will continue to function, but won’t receive any new features, important security updates, and may not be compatible with some apps. We strongly encourage users to upgrade to newer Android versions for the latest features and security enhancements.”
