Today in Paris, Samsung launched its newest foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 6, a successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 5 that arrived in Kenya a year ago.
While Samsung has led the foldable phone market for years, increased competition from Huawei has challenged its dominance. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 aims to solidify its position with notable enhancements.
One major change is the wider aspect ratio of both the outer and inner displays. The outer display now boasts a 22.1:9 aspect ratio, addressing criticisms of the narrowness of previous models. The inner display is also wider, with a 20.9:18 aspect ratio. The Fold 6 is also thinner and lighter than its predecessor, the Fold 5. It measures 68.1 x 153.5 x 12.1mm folded and 132.6 x 153.5 x 5.6mm unfolded, weighing in at 239g. In comparison, the Fold 5 measures 67.1 x 154.9 x 13.4mm folded and 154.9 x 129.9 x 6.1mm unfolded, weighing in at 253g.
Under the hood, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 features the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, 12GB of RAM, and storage options of 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. Samsung claims the display is brighter and the vapor chamber larger for improved cooling.
The camera setup remains unchanged from the Fold 5, as does the 4,400 mAh battery. Other familiar features include the fingerprint sensor and aluminum frame. However, the Fold 6 introduces an IP48 rating, offering more protection than the IPX8 rating of previous models.
Samsung is highlighting the software advancements in the Fold 6. It integrates many of the Galaxy AI features introduced in the Galaxy S24 series, such as showing translations on the outer display. The S Pen experience is also enhanced with Galaxy AI features like Smart Select and “Sketch to image,” which uses generative AI to create images from drawings.
Google Gemini will also be integrated, offering support for multi-window functionality. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 will launch with Android 14 and One UI 6.1, and like the Galaxy S24 series, it will receive seven years of Android and security updates.
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be available for pre-order in some markets starting today and will officially launch on July 24th. It will be available in Silver Shadow, Pink, and Navy colors, with Craft Black and Purity White options exclusive to some markets.
Samsung Mobile Kenya has announced the pricing of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 for the 256GB model starting at Kshs 263,999.
