In the wake of the youth-led protests in Kenya that saw the country’s Parliament overrun by citizens on June 25th, Kenyans had difficulty accessing the internet that evening. What happened next was the stuff that had been simmering below the surface for a while: calls to boycott Safaricom, Kenya’s largest mobile network operator by subscriber count.
Now, if Kenyans were to walk away from their darling Safaricom, they of the M-Pesa fame, where would they go? Do alternatives exist? What are the alternatives doing to take advantage of what has been an apparent deterioration of the relationship between many Kenyans and the green network?
Of course, top on anyone’s list is Airtel Kenya. Airtel, whose predecessors once had a first mover advantage in the local mobile telephony market, often leapfrogs Safaricom in the market share charts. Does it have the chops to unseat it? Can it?
Chenze, Dickson and Nick explore this love-hate relationship Kenyans have with Safaricom from the point of view of the offerings, deeds and misdeeds of the Airtel network.
