Xiaomi is doubling down on its African ambitions. Fresh off the heels of impressive smartphone sales and a growing presence in the continent, Xiaomi is gearing up to invest even more in Africa and explore new frontiers, including the exciting world of electric vehicles.

Lei Jun, the founder and CEO of Xiaomi, recently announced these plans at the 8th China-Africa Entrepreneurs Conference in Beijing. He shared that Xiaomi’s journey in Africa began in 2017, and since then, the company has been instrumental in digitizing and modernizing the continent.

The numbers speak for themselves. Xiaomi’s smartphone shipments in Africa soared by a whopping 45% year-over-year in the second quarter of 2024. This impressive growth has propelled Xiaomi to the third spot in the African smartphone market, with a market share of around 12%. But it’s not just smartphones; Xiaomi’s other products, like TVs, wearables, and robot vacuums, have also found a warm welcome among African consumers.

Already a household name in 16 African markets like Egypt, South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya, Xiaomi isn’t slowing down. Lei Jun emphasized that Xiaomi’s commitment to Africa extends far beyond smartphones. The company is keen on exploring new avenues for growth, such as electric vehicles. Xiaomi sees Africa as a promising market for electric cars and the company is actively seeking opportunities to collaborate with African businesses in this emerging sector.

To further strengthen its presence in Africa, Xiaomi is investing in local production. Mi TVs assembled in Egypt are set to hit the African market soon, demonstrating the company’s commitment to the region. This move not only brings products closer to consumers but also creates jobs and contributes to local economies.

Xiaomi’s expansion into Africa is a testament to the continent’s growing economic importance and the increasing demand for technology. With its focus on affordability, quality, and innovation, Xiaomi is well-positioned to meet the needs of African consumers and drive digital transformation.

As Lei Jun put it, “Xiaomi’s dream is to let everyone in the world enjoy the beautiful life brought by technology.” With its growing presence and ambitious plans, Xiaomi is making that dream a reality for millions of Africans.
