Google has quietly launched a new Google One Lite plan, promising a sweet 30GB of storage at a price so low it almost feels like a giveaway.
Now, before you sprint to your Google One settings to upgrade, here’s the catch: this gem is currently only available in India (cue the collective groan). But don’t worry, there’s a high chance we could see this budget-friendly plan spreading across the globe, and who knows, Kenya might be next! Fingers crossed, right?
What’s on the table? The new Lite plan offers 30GB of storage — which is double the usual 15GB you get for free. It’s a perfect deal for anyone who’s constantly running out of storage but doesn’t really need to pay for Google’s 100GB basic plan that costs Kshs 250 per month. Think of it as the “Lite” version of your favorite drink. It’s got all the refreshing goodness but comes in a smaller can (or in this case, storage capacity). Yours truly, for instance, isn’t so big on cameras, so I hardly fill up my basic plan. Heck, it took me years to fill up the free 15GB of storage in Google Photos, so this Lite plan is a perfect fit for me.
In India, users are getting this plan for a cool INR 59/month (yep, the first month is free). This translates to about Kshs 90 per month, or let’s just say Kshs 100 per month for argument’s sake. Compare this to Kshs 250/month for the 100GB plan in Kenya, and it’s clear why this Lite option would be an absolute game-changer for us, especially for those who don’t need all that extra space.
It’s like getting a storage closet instead of a full-on warehouse. And if you ask me, 30GB is enough for most of us to comfortably stash away our photos, documents, and memes (yes, I recently found out memes are so important to some people out here).
The downside? Google hasn’t confirmed when (or if) this plan will roll out beyond India. But it’s safe to say that Google won’t hesitate to roll out this new plan in more emerging markets, and Kenya, along with the rest of Africa, could be next on the list.
