Stanbic Bank has announced that users can now transfer money directly to Airtel Money wallets through its USSD platform by dialing *208#. This development introduces a seamless way for Stanbic Bank account holders to send funds to friends and family using Airtel Money, expanding the bank’s mobile money integration options.
To use the service, customers simply select the “Account to Mobile” option on the USSD channel, and then choose “Airtel.” The service is expected to provide an alternative for users who prefer quick and easy transfers without relying on smartphone apps. For queries or assistance, Stanbic Bank has made its helplines — 0711068888 and 080072044 — available to customers.
Dear Customer, EXCITING NEWS! You can now transfer to Airtel Money from your Stanbic Bank Account on USSD *208#. Use the Account to Mobile option on our USSD channel and select Airtel to conveniently send money to your family and friends.
A gap in the mobile app
While the new USSD feature is a welcome development, the bank’s mobile app still lacks the capability to send money to Airtel Money. Currently, the app supports transfers only to M-PESA, another popular mobile money platform in the country. Stanbic Bank has previously hinted that they are working on expanding the app’s functionality to include Airtel Money, but no specific timeline has been given.
The addition of Airtel Money transfers via USSD marks a step forward for Stanbic Bank as it seeks to provide more inclusive and user-friendly services. However, customers who prefer app-based banking will have to wait until the bank implements the promised updates to its mobile app.
User adoption and challenges
I’ve had challenges setting up the USSD feature on my Airtel number, potentially due to registration or technical issues. Despite these hurdles, I’m looking forward to testing out the service once I set it up.
The new Airtel Money integration adds to Stanbic Bank’s recent initiatives to enhance customer value. The bank, in collaboration with Mastercard, recently launched elite cards offering premium travel, lifestyle, and insurance benefits to high-net-worth clients. Additionally, Stanbic introduced a Money Market Fund designed to deliver superior returns for investors, showcasing the bank’s commitment to addressing diverse financial needs and providing innovative solutions for its customers.
For Stanbic Bank customers who use Airtel Money, this new functionality offers a promising step toward greater interoperability between banking and mobile money services, highlighting the bank’s commitment to meeting customer needs.
