Xiaomi has been in Kenya since 2016, but not many people know about the company and its products. Other than the little-known Avechi, finding a Xiaomi device locally can be a real hassle, until now.
Thanks to an exclusive partnership with Jumia, the Chinese smartphone vendor has today, Monday 19th, 2018, started selling the Redmi 5 Plus in Kenya.
Here’re the specs:
- 5.99-inch LCD 18:9 display with full HD+ resolution
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset
- 3 or 4GB of RAM
- 32 or 64GB of expandable storage
- 12MP main camera with PDAF, f/2.2 aperture and dual-tone LED flash
- 5MP front camera with 1080p video recording
- 4000mAh non-removable battery charged via microUSB port
- Android 7.1.2 Nougat with MIUI 9
- Extras: Rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, 3.5mm audio jack, Bluetooth 4.2, and Fast battery charging, etc.
Xiaomi’s smartphones are known for having premium-like builds, top-notch specs and features, and usually sell at significantly cheaper prices compared to the competition. This, in fact, is what has made the smartphone vendor very popular in India, the third-leading smartphone market in the world.
The decision to partner with Jumia is definitely huge for Xiaomi since it’s the leading online retailer around here. Xiaomi is hoping that working with Jumia will help propel the sales of the Redmi 5 Plus and possibly other handsets in the country. The Redmi 5 Plus price starts at Ksh 18,999 for the 3/32GB variant and Ksh 21,999 for the 4/64GB variant.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro is coming too
The Redmi 5 Plus was unveiled in India as Redmi Note 5. At the time, it was accompanied by a superior Redmi Note 5 Pro, but it seems the latter won’t be coming to Jumia alongside the former, at least for now. On the brighter side, Avechi, which until now has been the major unofficial seller of Xiaomi products in Kenya, is bringing you the Redmi Note 5 Pro later this month.
Here are the Redmi Note 5 Pro specs:
- 5.99-inch LCD 18:9 display with full HD+ resolution
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset
- 4 or 6GB of RAM
- 64GB of expandable storage
- Dual 12MP (f/2.2) + 5MP (f/2.0) back camera with PDAF and LED flash
- 20MP front camera with LED flash and 1080p video recording
- 4000mAh non-removable battery charged via microUSB port
- Android 7.1.2 Nougat with MIUI 9
- Extras: Rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, 3.5mm audio jack, Bluetooth 5.0, and Fast battery charging (Quick Charge 2.0), etc.
Beginning March 30th, Kenyans will be able to grab the Redmi Note 5 Pro on Avechi at a price of Ksh 29,999. This is quite hefty (although not strange since this is an unofficial channel), considering the phone is selling for INR 13,999 in India, which translates to about Ksh 22,000. This price is for the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant, but the 6/64GB variant is a little pricier at INR 16,999, which equates to about Ksh 26,500. On Avechi, this model will be sold at Ksh 34,999.
Update: Redmi Note 5 Pro is now available on Avechi priced at Ksh 29,999 and Ksh 34,999 for the 4GB and 6GB RAM variants.
