Finally, the Xiaomi Mi A1 is receiving the long-awaited to Android 9 Pie in the country. The update has been rolling out over the last 3 days with my unit getting it just yesterday.
Reports started filtering in that the year-old device had started receiving the update globally a few days to Christmas Day 2018.
With this move, the Mi A1 has now received at least 2 major software upgrades on top of the usual monthly security updates from Google that it receives religiously (albeit always a month late) thanks to belonging to Google’s Android One device program.
As such, it becomes the last of Xiaomi’s trio of Android One-powered device to receive the Pie update, after the Xiaomi Mi A2 and the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite, this year’s darlings which started receiving the update back in November (December for Kenya).
The Xiaomi Mi A1 has been stuck on Android Oreo since the last day of 2017, at least globally since the update only hit devices in Kenya a year ago.
Android 9 Pie brings with it several features including gestures, App Actions, Digital Wellbeing and others as highlighted in detail here and here. Specifically for the Xiaomi Mi A1, the update which brings with it Android Pie also adds one other important feature that another notable Android One smartphone available for purchase in Kenya, Infinix’s Note 5, has since been updated to include: FM radio.
Also included with the update is the January 2019 security patch from Google.
The update clocks in at just over a gigabyte.
The big question now remains, will the Mi A1 survive to get a third major update (Android Q)?
