MediaTek yesterday announced two new chipsets called the Helio G90 and G90T. The latter is already set to appear in a gaming phone from Xiaomi, but we don’t know which one just yet.
MediaTek chipsets aren’t synonymous with gaming phones, primarily because of their weak GPU performance, a very sensitive area when it comes to gaming. But with the Helio G90 and G90T, the Taiwanese chipmaker believes it has the right balance that’ll ensure optimum gaming performance on the budget.
To show you why MediaTek is so confident with the performance of the G90 chipset, here are results of how it performed in benchmarks on Geekbench and AnTuTu.
Geekbench
On Geekbench 4.3, the Helio G90 mated to 6GB RAM and Android 9 scores 7193 points in multi-core tests, which is where the gaming action lies. These great figures place the Helio G90 chipsets close to equal performance as the Snapdragon 845 chipsets from yesteryear. However, given that these are tests from April, it’s possible the chipset has been further optimized to improve performance.
Also, the fact that the RAM pairing can go all the way to 10GB should play a role in changing the performance scores.
AnTuTu
Results from another popular benchmarking platform, AnTuTu, are even more promising. Here, we don’t know much about the RAM and OS the Helio G90 was paired to, but the score is as good as it gets, coming in at 222,282.
This score is a combination of CPU, GPU, UX, and memory performance and undoubtedly, it’s impressive coming from a company that is known to produce some mediocre chipsets.
With scores in the regions of 212,000 having been recorded on Snapdragon 730-powered devices like Xiaomi Mi 9T, it’s clear that MediaTek isn’t playing games with the Helio G90 chipsets.
It remains to be seen how the chipset will perform when in an actual gaming environment.
