Spotify Premium subscribers in Kenya can now sample and enjoy music curated by the AI DJ that Spotify announced at the start of the year.
Dubbed DJ and still in its beta-testing phase, the feature is basically an endless playlist of songs that Spotify’s algorithms have deemed to resonate with your music tastes, based on your listening history, likes, playlists you subscribe to and other analytics gathered on the platform.
While users, including those on the free tier who are not getting the AI DJ at this time, are very much familiar with Spotify’s advanced music surfacing and recommendation algorithms which make the various playlists available on the platform an easy fit for many, the difference with DJ is that it also includes commentary like the kind that a normal disc jockey in a studio or a radio show host would throw around during their set or show. It will even handle transitions just like a DJ would.
As of now, DJ is limited to just English-language commentary.
If you’re a DJ (or an aspiring one) reading this, it’s very okay to be scared of the future that’s in store for all of us in this age of AI aka the knowledge age. It’s not just ChatGPT coming for the jobs of people like yours truly. Yours, as well, is on the line.
“Since launching in the US, Canada, UK and Ireland earlier this year, DJ has become the most discussed Spotify feature on social media, and we’re excited to bring it to Kenya today,” Spotify says in a statement.
“You can find your personal AI DJ by opening the Spotify mobile app on your iOS or Android device. From there, head to your Music Feed on Home and tap play on DJ,” Spotify adds.
