Xiaomi has introduced one of its more recent smartphones, the Redmi 12, in the Kenyan market today.
Pricing for the device starts at Kshs 20,7999, according to Xiaomi Kenya. That amount is for the base model packing 4GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage. Parting with Kshs 22,099 will have one getting double the RAM while Kshs 2,000 more (Kshs 24,099) gets one the same device but the highest spec variant with twice the storage (256GB) on top of the 8GB RAM.
At those prices, the Redmi 12 fills in a small gap that exists between the Redmi A series (like the A2+ launched locally in May) and the Redmi 12C that Xiaomi introduced in the local market in the first quarter of the year that operate at the entry-level smartphone segment and the Redmi Note 12 series that the brand has introduced to the Kenyan market this year that takes care of the mid-range smartphone segment.
Redmi is the Chinese device maker’s sub-brand that specializes in affordable smartphones.
In the case of the Redmi 12, prospective buyers can expect to get a 6.79-inch Full HD display with a 90Hz refresh rate and certification for extended usage without eye fatigue kicking in, especially at night, a triple camera setup at the back comprising a 50-megapixel main sensor backed by an 8-megapixel ultrawide and a 2-megapixel macro lens, a MediaTek Helio G88 chipset under the hood, a 5,000mAh battery that Xiaomi says will have you stay online for over a day (26 hours) and IP53 rating to handle dust and everyday stains.
There’s a 3.5mm headphone jack that one can use with whatever pair of wired earphones they have lying around (now that you traditionally don’t get any on Xiaomi devices). Storage can be expanded with the use of a microSD card to up to 1 terabyte.
The Redmi 12 runs on MIUI 14 which is based on Android 13.
