YouTube Premium is now available in Kenya. Alongside this, Kenyans will also gain access to YouTube Music Premium, allowing them to stream music without ads, when offline or when the app is in the background. But being a new service in the country, not everyone might be in the know-how when it comes to how to sign up for YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium in Kenya. If that’s you, well, here’s how to upgrade your free account to take advantage of the various perks that come with premium membership.

How to sign up for YouTube Premium

  • Open the YouTube app
  • Tap on your avatar
  • Select ‘Get YouTube Premium’

First, make sure you have the latest version of the YouTube app from the Play Store. Next, tap on “You” in the bottom-right corner to open your profile with a menu. From the several options you see, tap on “Get YouTube Premium.”

On the landing page, you should see a large “Get YouTube Premium” button. Tap on the button, pick the plan that suits you between “Individual,” “Family,” and “Student” and tap on “Checkout” in the bottom right corner of the interface. If you’ve already set up a payment method in the Google Play Store, proceed by tapping on “Subscribe,” otherwise, enter your credit card details, and you should be good to go. YouTube is offering a free 1-month trial before you start getting billed Kshs 499, Kshs 949 or Kshs 289 a month for the individual, family or student plan respectively.

How to sign up for YouTube Music Premium

It’s an easy process to sign up for YouTube Music Premium, basically the same as YouTube Premium. But first, you must download the app from the Google Play Store. Once installed, you can either tap on the avatar in the top right corner and then “Get Music Premium” at the bottom of the screen. Or simply tap on “Upgrade” in the bottom right corner of the YouTube Music home page. Either method will take you to a landing page with a big “Get Music Premium” button. Proceed by selecting the plan you want between the three Individual, Family and Student plans.

Once you pick your preferred plan, tap on “Confirm” in the bottom right corner and complete the process by hitting “Subscribe.” Again, if you don’t have an existing payment method, you’ll have to enter your credit card information for this process to complete. Similar to YouTube Premium, you also get a free 1-month trial window before you get billed.
