As expected, Open AI has made available its ChatGPT app for Android.
The app, which comes months after the rollout of its iOS counterpart, is being made available in phases. Currently, Android users in Bangladesh, Brazil, India and the United States are the only ones able to download the app, according to Open AI.
Open AI had opened the pre-registration to be notified of the app’s availability and then automatically download it to one’s device(s) to everyone.
ChatGPT is the early runaway success of the knowledge age, breaking multiple records and registered unprecedented interest in a product in years after its late 2022 launch.
Built on Open AI’s large language models and years of research by the upstart and other pioneers who are struggling to catch up (*cough* Google), the conversational style of the chatbot has been seen by many as the future of how we surface information on the web and elsewhere, taking the place of the traditional search engine and its blue links.
It can write essays, write code, cheer you up, revamp your CV and, even though your teachers and bosses will not like it, help you with your class assignments and work tasks, among many other things it’s capable of. Its popularity has led to the springing up of new careers. For instance, “Prompt Engineers” are all the rage right now. If you’re wondering what that is, it’s a fancy term for people who have mastered the art of getting the most out of AI products like ChatGPT to make the execution of various tasks possible by drawing on their understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Natural Language Processing (NLP), problem definition skills, creativity, among others.
Initially only limited to the models it was trained on, ChatGPT has recently been opened up to the internet and paying users can supercharge it further with the use of various plugins as well as access to the more recent GPT4 model which is more fluent and natural than its predecessor, GPT3. GPT3.5 is what powers the ChatGPT you can use without paying. GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer.
The launch of the Android app, while not much of a game changer as it brings with it the same features that users can access through a web browser, is expected to mark the end of all the clones and misleading applications that have swarmed the Play Store for months, some harvesting user data for days before they are kicked out while others have managed to continue operating under the radar. Now, there’s an official ChatGPT app.
