There has been plenty of talk about Samsung’s intentions to charge a fee to access some of the newly launched Galaxy AI features on its smartphones and tablets while offering others for free. This was fueled by the discovery of a footnote in the official Galaxy S24 announcement stating that Galaxy AI features will be provided for free until the end of 2025 on supported Samsung Galaxy devices. However, a recent report now paints a more nuanced picture.
According to Samsung Mobile president, TM Roh, people have diverse needs for mobile AI. Some are content with free AI capabilities, while others desire more powerful tools and will even pay for them. This suggests a future where Samsung could bundle basic Galaxy AI in devices for free while offering premium tools with subscription fees. TM Roh says that:
According to our analysis, there are various needs for mobile AI. So, there will be consumers who will be satisfied with using the AI capabilities for free. Then there could also be customers who wish for even more powerful AI capabilities and even pay for them. So, in the future decision making, we will take all these factors into consideration.
This potential two-tiered approach echoes ChatGPT’s model, where a basic version is free but a premium tier that offers faster responses and peak-hour access is also available at a fee. Similarly, Samsung might reserve its more powerful, cloud-reliant AI tools for paying customers, but this is just an educated guess.
While the line between free and paid AI features remains unclear, I don’t expect to see major changes until the Galaxy S25 arrives next year. For now, it’s safe to say Samsung’s AI future will likely be a blend of complimentary offerings and premium services catering to a range of user needs and budgets.
In essence, the “free vs. paid” narrative surrounding Samsung’s Galaxy AI plans oversimplifies the situation. But as things stand, the company appears to be crafting a flexible model that balances user needs with potential revenue streams, paving the way for a future where powerful AI capabilities co-exist alongside accessible core functionalities on Galaxy devices.
