Amidst the ongoing protests in Kenya, a Samsung Galaxy A10s phone has emerged as the unlikely hero for taking a bullet for a protestor and earning the title of “lifesaver.” Yes, you heard it right—while this smartphone typically provides connectivity, entertainment, and selfies, it just added “bulletproof vest” to its resume.

The protests, which have seen heightened tensions and unfortunate violence across the country, had a particularly bizarre but heartwarming incident. According to a post shared on X, one of the protesters reportedly found themselves caught in the crossfire, with a bullet heading straight for a potentially fatal strike. But just like Bruno Mars crooned in his hit song “Grenade”—“I’d catch a grenade for ya”—this Samsung Galaxy A10s essentially sang, “I’d catch a bullet for ya!”

One of the gunshot survivors was saved by the phone. The phone absorbed most of the impact and the bullet grazed a thigh. #RejectFinanceBill2024

The heroics unfolded as the bullet, speeding with lethal intent, was intercepted by the unsuspecting smartphone. The image of the phone tells the whole story: a dented and battered back cover with a noticeable bullet mark, circled for emphasis. The phone took most of the impact, bravely sacrificing its glossy exterior and functionality. The bullet, its momentum significantly reduced, merely grazed the protester’s thigh, causing only a minor injury.

The phone’s lifesaving act has led to some lighthearted moments, with some drawing comparisons to the indestructible Nokia 3310 and even movie scenes. One X user quipped, “A Nokia 3310 would have sent that bullet right back to the police!” Others marveled at the real-life drama unfolding, with comments like, “This is movie stuff!” and “I’ve only seen these things in movies. It’s scary that we’re here now.”

Who knew that when Samsung was designing the Galaxy A10s, they were also embedding superhero traits? Interestingly, the Galaxy A10s has a plastic finish, contrary to many phones today that have a glass finish. The phone’s role in this incredible story highlights how smartphone designs have evolved over time. Forget about drop tests; this phone survived a bullet test! And yes, as a Kenyan has pointed out, a Nokia 3310 might have sent the bullet back, but this time, it was a Samsung phone that rose to the occasion.

Some Kenyans are even urging the company to capitalize on this unique marketing opportunity. “Send this man an S24 Ultra right now!” one X user urged. “This is an ad!” Another suggested, “Samsung could use this to market their devices as bulletproof.” While the incident may have provided much-needed comic relief, it also serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing violence in Kenya.

The story of the Samsung Galaxy A10s is an example of how technology can impact our lives in some of the most unlikeliest ways, even saving them in the most dire of circumstances. A smartphone catching a bullet might sound like a plot twist from a sci-fi movie, but here it is, in real life, providing a silver lining amid the chaos.
