HMD Global has finally announced the start of the rollout of the Nokia 2.1’s Android 10 update.

The Nokia 2.1 launched in Kenya 2 years ago as a successor to the first-generation Nokia 2 that launched a year earlier to cater to the entry-level market.

Back then, it arrived running the Go edition of Android Oreo. 5 months later, it would be updated to the Go edition of Android 9 Pie.

Now, the device is receiving a bump up to the Go edition of Android 10.

Given such a timeline, this is the last major operating system upgrade for HMD Global’s entry-level smartphone. It should, however, continue receiving monthly security updates for at least another year, going by the Finnish company’s stance on Android updates.

The Go edition of Android 10, which was announced a year ago, brings with it a new encryption standard, Adiantum, which is making its way to the Nokia 2.1. It also brings with it better support for Android Go-optimised applications like Gallery Go, a lightweight take on the popular Google Photos app.

With Android 10 rolling out to the Nokia 2.1, two other devices, the Nokia 3.1 and the Nokia 5.1, remain. Their updates should be in any time now, going by HMD Global’s update roadmap which was revised earlier in the year in light of the ongoing pandemic. The Nokia 1, which is clustered with the Nokia 2.1, Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 5.1, received its update 2 months ago.

According to HMD Global, several Asian countries, the so-called “first wave markets” are getting the update immediately with the rest expected to have received it by Monday, September 7.
