Oppo has just launched the Reno12 and Reno12 F in Kenya, and if you’re an Oppo fan, you might want to sit up for this one. These two models, which you can now pre-order until September 1 and score free Oppo Enco Buds2 earbuds, are all set to spice up the mid-range smartphone market. But before you dive in, there are a few things you should know.
Let’s start with the Oppo Reno12 F, which keeps the same Kshs 50,000 price tag as its immediate predecessor. It’s got a pretty impressive spec sheet for the price. A 6.67-inch FHD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate is a nice touch, especially for those who love smooth scrolling and sharp visuals. Under the hood, it’s powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset, paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. That’s a lot of muscle for the money.
On the camera front, the Reno12 F doesn’t disappoint either. A 50MP main sensor, accompanied by an 8MP ultra-wide and a 2MP macro lens, should cover all your photography needs. Selfie enthusiasts get a 32MP front camera, because, let’s face it, selfies are serious business these days. And with a 5000mAh battery and Oppo’s SUPERVOOC fast charging, this phone is geared to keep up with your busy day.

Now, let’s talk about the star of the show — the Oppo Reno12. At Kshs 70,000, slightly above the launch price of the Reno11, it’s priced to attract those looking for a bit more oomph in their smartphone. The 6.7-inch 3D Flexible AMOLED display is a sight to behold, curving gently at the edges like a well-tailored suit. It offers a whopping 1.07 billion colors, making everything from your Instagram feed to Netflix look stunningly vibrant.

However, if you’re keeping tabs on Oppo’s global releases, you might notice something interesting — or perhaps disappointing, depending on how you look at it. The Reno12 hitting Kenyan shelves is a slightly toned-down version of the one that launched in China back in May, something I’ve been quite vocal about. While the Chinese variant packs the more powerful MediaTek Dimensity 8250, the Kenyan version settles for a Dimensity 7300-Energy chipset. It’s still a solid performer, but not quite the beast its overseas cousin is.
The Kenyan Reno12 also packs a 50MP main camera with OIS, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and a 2MP macro lens. This is the same setup on the F, but nowhere near the 50MP+50MP+8MP package on the Chinese variant of the Oppo Reno12. Once again, why Oppo?
One thing that stands out with this launch is the simultaneous arrival of both the Reno12 and Reno12 F. Unlike the Reno11 series, where the Reno11 F was fashionably late to the party by a few months, this time around, Oppo decided to send both siblings out into the world together. So, whether you’re after the premium features of the Reno12 or the more wallet-friendly Reno12 F, you won’t have to wait.
Both devices run on the latest stable version of Android — Android 14 — but the Reno12 F gets ColorOS 14.0 while the Reno12 has ColorOS 14.1 out of the box. They should both receive at least two more major OS updates, up to Android 16.
Pre-orders are live until September 1, 2024, with the devices expected to start shipping right after. You can secure yours through the Oppo Kenya website, with the help of ShipShap to handle the logistics.

In a nutshell, the Reno12 series offers something for everyone — whether you’re looking for top-tier specs or a solid all-rounder without breaking the bank. Just be sure to check the spec sheet closely if you’ve had your eye on the international models, as there are some differences worth noting. But all in all, Oppo continues to deliver in the mid-range segment, proving once again that you don’t need to spend a fortune to get a feature-packed smartphone.
