Over the last two weeks, at least for us in Kenya, Samsung has been hard at work rolling out the latest update to its One UI Android custom overlay, One UI 6.1.1.
The update, which was announced by Samsung at the start of the month, brings to Samsung’s entire smartphone lineup (or at least the eligible Galaxy smartphones starting with the Galaxy S series devices and cascading down to the Galaxy A series smartphones) the AI (Artificial Intelligence) features that the company debuted on the company’s latest foldables: the Galaxy Z Fold6 and the Galaxy Z Flip6.
Dubbed Galaxy AI when they debuted early in the year on the company’s flagship smartphone series, the Galaxy S24 series, the new AI features Samsung announced in July include a new Composer feature accessible using Samsung’s own keyboard that powers a Chat Assist feature that helps when drafting emails, social media posts and the like, the ability to translate and summarize documents, etc.
While all of that is good and well and users around the world have been updating their Galaxy S24 and S23 series devices in order to get them, there has been some trouble brewing after some Galaxy S23 Ultra users reported that the latest update was wrecking havoc on their devices.
The problem, which is limited to just the Ultra model and doesn’t affect the standard and Plus models of the Galaxy S23 series, is seen when one takes photos using the stock camera app at between 16x and 19.9x zoom levels. The resultant images are blurry and also have ghosting issues.
Samsung acknowledged the problems in a response on its community forums and the company has been widely expected to issue a fix, by way of a software update, soon.
While Galaxy S23 Ultra users wait for that to happen, it appears that Samsung has since pulled the update. Probably as a measure to ensure more users don’t download and install it until a fix is in place.
